Ah, Sleep……….

Ah, Sleep……….
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP MH, NC

In our busy and hectic lives the importance of restful sleep is often overlooked and under stressed. Research has shown that 75% of people have difficulty sleeping and more often people sleeping closer to six hours per night rather than the recommended eight. Loss of a few hours of sleep here and there should not cause alarm, it is the chronic sleep loss that has an effect on health. Research from Harvard Medical School has shown that that loss of sleep can decrease learning and memory, cause weight gain, increase stress and hypertension, cause an increase in accidents, and decrease the body’s immune system functioning leaving it more susceptible to cancer.

Some of the first signs of sleep deprivation include irritability and moodiness, next one may experience slowed speech, inability to multitask, and impaired judgment. Eventually the person will start to fall into a micro-sleep for 5-10 seconds, which has it’s obvious hazards such as driving. The National Highway Safety Association (NHSA) has found that falling asleep while driving is responsible for a minimum of 100,000 accidents each year in the U.S. Lastly, after prolonged insomnia the hypnagogic hallucinations start to take effect.

Eight hours is the general recommendation for most folks, but depending on the individual this number can vary from six to ten. Some can function on six hours of sleep and not experience signs of sleep deprivation and others cannot function without ten full hours. The trick is to get to know your body and how you respond to a good night’s sleep.
According to sleep researchers, stress in the number one cause of short-term sleeping issues and usually sleeping patterns will return to normal when the problem is resolved. Therefore stress management is a good approach to help resolve difficulty sleeping. Other factors that can affect sleep include alcohol and caffeine intake, exercising within a few hours of bedtime, mental exertion right before going to bed, jet lag, and not having regular sleep schedule.

If stress is the root cause of sleep disturbances there are many natural therapies available such as meditation, yoga, guided imagery, visualization, hypnotherapy, and progressive relaxation that can be utilized to ensure a successful night’s sleep. Other factors that can be implemented include a keeping a regular sleep routine, write down anything that may be on your mind before bed, and attempt to go to bed before bedtime (you may actually make it there by bedtime). Make sure the environment is optimal, comfortable temperature, dark room and minimize the external noise.

France Bans Monsanto’s MON810 Corn

France Bans Monsanto’s MON810 Corn
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, MH, NC

Due to the reported environmental risks and under the supervision of European agriculture regulators France has put a temporary ban on MON810 corn, the genetically engineered corn produced by biotech giant Monsanto Co.. MON810 is the variety of corn that is genetically modified to be a toxic plant to pests. France asked the European Union for approval in a letter which cited recent scientific literature supporting a variety of notable threats the corn poses on the atmosphere. The European agriculture and environment ministries responded stating that because it is close to the planting season they would put a temporary ban on the cultivation of MON810 corn for environmental protection purposes. Last year France produced 3.8 million acres of corn and is the European Union’s largest producer of corn.

Monsanto denies the scientific evidence cited by the French. Monsanto’s MON810 corn was banned in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Luxembourg for the same environmental and health reasons Environmental concerns include weed and insect resistance, over use of pesticides, pollution and loss of biodiversity. Many studies have released evidence that the MON810 corn variety is accountable for producing infertility, neurological damage, gastrointestinal dysfunction and many other health imbalances. The concern over the corn has provoked a group of 22 corn entomologists to submit a letter to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency warning that GM corn is the source of many of the severe problems we are noticing within the environment today. However, US officials are slow to react as MON810 is widely planted throughout the US.

Human Embryonic Cells Approved as a Flavor Chemical

Human Embryonic Cells Approved as a Flavor Chemical
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

The Obama Administration has recently approved the use of aborted embryonic kidney tissue as a flavoring chemical. Shocking as this may sound, it’s true. The Obama Administration has stated that using human kidney tissue is part of “ordinary business operations.”
Pepsi has an affiliation with San Diego biotech company Senomyx which uses human embryonic tissue in their research and production of their products. Senomyx refers to the aborted fetal cells as “isolated taste receptors.”

In 2011 whistleblower Children of God for Life a non-profit group pioneered a worldwide boycott of Pepsi products when they discovered Pepsi’s alliance with Senomyx. It was also noted that at the time Pepsi had other sources for companies to produce their flavor chemicals, but choose to use Senomyx. In an effort to resolve the boycott the stockholders of Pepsi filed a petition of resolution to Senomyx requesting that they “adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements.” The Obama Administration rejected the proposal in the favor of Senomyx’s right to use aborted fetus cells as a flavoring agent. Assuring consumers that the use of human tissue cells is a normal practice for beverage manufactures.

According to reports the aborted human tissue did not end up in PepsiCo’s final product. However, Pepsi paid Senomyx $30 million to use the aborted fetal tissue as a research tool to evaluate how human taste receptors responded to it as a flavoring agent in their products. This alone is enough to make me ban their products. At this time Kraft, Nestle, and Solae all have partnerships with Senomyx and with the Obama Administrations’ approval we may start to see aborted human fetal cells included as one of those “natural flavors.”

Upcycling the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Upcycling the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

It is estimated that several billion tons of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean every year. This becomes more and more obvious as beaches are polluted with plastic bottle caps, candy wrappers and other garbage along the shoreline, but this is only a small amount of the total accumulation of contamination. The Great Pacific Trash Vortex is a gyre of marine litter located in the central North Pacific Ocean about 1,000 miles off the coast of California. The gyre is described as a concentrated area of debris, chemical waste and plastic. The Garbage Patch was predicted in 1988 by a paper published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. The prediction was based on conclusions from several Alaskan researchers between 1985 and 1988 based on the measurements of plastic found in the North Pacific Ocean, which found exceptionally high concentrations of garbage accruing in regions due to ocean currents. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was then discovered by Charles Moore as he was returning from the Transpac sailing race in 1997. Charles saw the monstrous patch of floating plastic waste and alerted marine officials. Research indicates that 80% of the garbage accumulated in the Patch is a result of land based waste and 20% is from ships with unsustainable practices. Recent reports have shown that the island of waste contains over 15 million pounds of junk and is heading for the Western Coast and Canada. At this time scientists have confirmed that it is beginning to collect on the coast.

According to the L.A. Times plastic constitutes 90 percent of all trash floating in the world’s oceans and the United Nations Environment Program estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean hosts 46,000 pieces of floating plastic. Rather than creating more plastic doesn’t it make more sense to recycle the plastic we already have? That’s what the peoples at Method and Envision Plastic thought so they teamed up to upcycle the Great Pacific Garbage Patch into bottles that could be reused again and again. Envision Plastic is a recycling company that has created a new process which can produce a recycled product that is similar to virgin HDPE resin from plastic found in the ocean. Their mission is to use plastic that is already available on the planet, to avoid producing more waste. Method was successfully able to collect plastic from the gyre and create Ocean PCR, a 100% post-consumer HDPE, 25% of which plastic was collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Making plastic bottles out of the Pacific Ocean garbage is an innovative start to solving the multitude of problems that come from the pollution in the ocean waters.

Monsanto Threatens to Sue over GMO Labeling

Monsanto Threatens to Sue over GMO Labeling
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

Several states have initiatives that would require food manufacturing companies to label GMO products. Currently it is estimated that Vermont has an overwhelming amount of support, as 96% of the voters support the “right to know” legislation, which would prohibit any GMO-containing food to be labeled as “natural” as some of these products are deceitfully labeled and can be found at health food super markets. Numerous polls have shown that Americans strongly support the labeling of GMO products and if Vermont or any other state passes legislation that would require food manufactures to label GMO products it would only be a matter of time until other states followed suit and passed similar legislature.

According to Benson, “At least 70 percent of the “inner aisle” food supply, or packaged, processed foods found in the center aisles at the grocery store, now contain GM ingredients.” This labeling will make consumers fully aware of what products contain GMOs, giving the consumer the opportunity to make a choice as to what ingredients they would like to purchase and ingest.

Monsanto, the infamous GMO trailblazer is fully aware of this legislative chain reaction and has responded with threats of their own legal action. Monsanto has reportedly stonewalled the Vermont House Agriculture Committee to refrain from holding meetings until after the legislative session ends, which could put an end to the bill. Some believe that the state may be leery to engage in a lengthy legal battle with the biotech company due to the 1994 case lost over the labeling of dairy cows injected with bovine growth hormones.

Talk to Your Doctor about Pharmageddon

Talk to Your Doctor about Pharmageddon
Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP MH, NC

Prescription drugs are becoming a leading cause of death in the 21st century. According to 2009 Times analysis of the death statistics (the most current analysis available) more people were killed by prescription drugs than motor vehicle accidents; 36,284 people died from car accidents and 37,485 people overdosed from the hefty amount of drugs prescribed to them by their primary health care physicians. Prescription drug fatalities are becoming an increasing concern as the death rate has between 2000 and 2008 has tripled among those aged 50 to 69. Commonly used and abused prescriptions drugs include OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax and Soma. The Times analysis also found that prescription drugs now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.

Pharmageddon was coined by Ivan Illich in 1976 due to his increasing concern over conventional medical practices and its effect on public health. Ivan defined pharmageddon as “the prospect of a world in which medicine and medicine produce more ill-health, and when medical progress does more harm than good.” Currently we are noticing the need to investigate this trend and the risk factors that exploit it.

Pharmaceutical companies have a powerful influence on the health care system, drug treatments, and health outcomes. Over half the pharmaceutical companies in the world are located in the United States and our health as a nation is a reflection of the long term effect pharmaceutical drugs have on a society. Excessive marketing and over prescription has created the powerful pharmaceutical industry whose primary goal is to suppress the body’s natural expression of symptoms and not explore the root of the problem, therefore no true healing can ever occur. When side-effects are experienced from pharmaceutical drugs more drugs are prescribed, it’s a vicious cycle that in many cases leads to death. Obsession with drug treatment affects everyone, young and old. Drug marketing campaigns display exaggerated advantages of their products and only a limited amount of information is available in small print on the potential risks that are associated with the drugs, making it difficult to make an informed decision about one’s well-being. According to a June 2010 report released by the Journal of General Internal Medicine the cost of adverse drug reactions s cost the American society more than $136 billion annually which is more than the total cost of diabetic or cardiovascular care. The Journal also stated that adverse reactions to drugs cause death or injury to 1 of 5 hospital patients, and rationalize that this was due to the copious amount of drugs that were used and prescribed, as a single patient may receive multiple prescriptions which counteract each other. How can the medical industry, the sole industry that promotes pharmaceutical drugs not take this information to heart and start making changes within their institution?

Healthy Sustainable Fish Options

Healthy Sustainable Fish Options
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

The old expression, there are plenty of fish in the sea, may not be appropriate anymore as many sea creatures are declining in population. Poor management of fisheries and an increase in the world’s population have led to a decline in the number of certain fish species. Ocean fish are hunted on a large scale and despite the massive size and depth of the ocean; the population of wild fish has been declining for the last 15 years. Overfishing, illegal and unregulated fishing, habitat damage, bycatch (accidentally catching unwanted species) and poor management have all lead to a steady decline in certain populations of fish. According to Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, nearly two-thirds of the assessed fish populations are unhealthy and they believe that the unassessed population is in worse condition. Many new species such as the Atlantic halibut, Bluefin tuna and yellowfin flounder have all been added to the list of dangerously low populations.

Large scale commercial fishing began in the 1800’s and has made a major impact on the population of fish. Currently 85% of the world’s fisheries are exploited or have collapsed and the demand for fish continues to rise. Fish are removed from the ocean quicker than they can reproduce and larger fish that have a long life span are the first to become extinct because they are slower to reproduce.

The decreasing amount of fish also makes it harder for fisherman to make a living as they become more desperate to catch fish it can lead to illegal fishing practices. There are currently over 2.5 times the amounts of sustainable fishing boats on the ocean, all chasing after a decreasing amount of marine wildlife. Common areas of concern include catching fish that are undersize, operating out of season, using illegal equipment and taking more than is allowed.

Another concern is the health of the fish that are sold. Some fish are known to be high in mercury and other contaminants. Oil spills and radiation exposure have also made us more aware that we need to protect our oceans and choose fish sustainably so we can ensure the future of precious marine life. By making mindful choices as consumers we can do our part to help. Generally fish that are smaller will contain less mercury than larger predatory types. Fish that reproduce quickly are also better options, as their species can quickly repopulate. It is also important to know where your fish comes from and it was caught. Fisherman who pole or troll fish are considered to be the most sustainable.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch produces an annual pocket guide that can be used to help you determine the best choices for you depending on the region you are in and can be downloaded at the following link:
http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.aspx

Some fish that are sustainable for those located on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States include Arctic Char (farmed), Barramundi (US farmed), Catfish (US farmed), Clams (farmed), Crab: Dungeness, Stone, Halibut: Pacific (US), Salmon (Alaska wild), Scallops (farmed), Striped Bass (farmed & wild*), Tilapia (US farmed), Trout: Rainbow (US farmed), Tuna: Albacore (Canada & US Pacific, troll/pole).

Top Vegetarian Junk Foods

Top Vegetarian Junk Foods
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

In an effort to switch to a healthier diet and get away from the standard American diet some may think the first step is to cut out meat and adopt a vegetarian diet. However, when making the switch it is easy to get fooled into thinking that because an item is vegetarian it is healthy. It is important to always be mindful, read labels and make sure you really know what you are getting.

Vegetarian meat substitutes such as veggie burgers and hotdogs often contain low quality soy that has been highly processed with hexane and other chemicals. Egg rolls and other deep fried appetizers are also highly processed and drenched in rancid oils. Soy ice cream may taste good, but it’s loaded with fat and sugar. A healthier alternative would be frozen fruit or herbal tea popsicles. Cheese puffs and chips have been fried in hydrogenated oils and often include artificial flavors and colors. It is also important to avoid “natural flavors” because it’s a code name for MSG. The artificial ingredients are great for the manufacturer because they help extend the shelf life of the product, but very unhealthy for the consumer. Most crackers are made from white flour which has been stripped of all the vitamins, nutrients, and fiber. Look for crackers that have whole grains, fiber and have been baked and not fried. Power bars promise to give you quick energy and have become a popular snack or quick breakfast food, but it is important to read the label as some are just a candy bar in disguise. Make sure the product has fiber and no high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil or candy like ingredients. Some power bars are definitely better than others, but if you can’t find a good one try making your own. Canned soups are another popular offender. Research has shown canned soups to contain a significant amount of sodium and Bisphenol-A (BPA). One study revealed that those who consumed one can daily for five days had a BPA urine concentration 13 times higher than those who consumed non-canned soup (Hudson). Overall it’s good to avoid all canned goods and opt for fresh.

In the fast paced world that we live in it can be easy to choose a frozen dinner that can be nuked in the microwave. Convenience foods have their obvious attraction, but having a variety of whole foods available will help to limit temptation. Keeping the refrigerator stocked with a variety of vegetables makes it simple to make a quick salad or a bowl of fruit. Seeds and nuts are also convenient, healthy and filling and can be mixed with dried fruits.

Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox
By Jackie Christensen, MSHH, HHP, MH, NC

This week we celebrated the vernal or spring equinox which marks the end of winter and the birth of spring in the Northern hemisphere. This is an important time of renewal not only in the environment, but also for our physical, mental and spiritual bodies. It is the time to wake early and rise and shine with the sun. This is the time of year to become more active, enjoy the outdoors and participate in more yang activities such as jogging, brisk walks, bicycling, and other aerobics you may enjoy.

Green is the color that is appropriately associated with spring. As plants and flowers begin to bud one cannot help but to notice the young green growth that surrounds us. This is also the time of year when the appetite diminishes, as the body has a natural propensity to cleanse itself of all the toxins accumulated throughout the winter. During the spring season the body requires the least amount of food therefore the diet should be the lightest this time of year. Salty foods should be limited in spring because they have a sinking energy and this is a time to rise dynamically. If too many salty and fatty foods are consumed it can lead to spring fever.

Energetically rising foods should be consumed during spring. This includes herbs that are pungent and sweet such as basil, fennel, rosemary, caraway, dill and marjoram. This is the time to indulge in young budding sprouts, fresh greens, grasses, raw and sprouted foods. However, if the weather has not started to warm in your area it is advised to lightly steam or cook foods until the weather warms up.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) spring is associated with the wood element and the liver. When we are balanced we experience creativity and have the energy to organize and make decisions about our aspirations. We have the energy to perform the actions that are needed to attain our goals. However, when we are out of balance the emotion associated with the liver is anger. One of the first signs of a liver imbalance is when there are emotional issues associated with anger. This imbalance can be experienced as impatience, violence, frustration, impulsive, and arrogant behaviors. When these emotions are repressed they can evolve and manifest into depression, so it is good to find a healthy way to express any emotions associated with anger. One way to avoid liver stagnation is to avoid fatty or oily foods and consume bitter foods such as amaranth, quinoa, rye and romaine lettuce are recommended. Bitter herbs such as dandelion, milk thistle, chaparral, and chamomile flowers are also advised.
